RP Reading List.

Post  Scaeptrum on Mon Jun 11, 2012 1:11 pm

Some of you in this RP better your roleplay skills by reading fantasy fiction, something which I do myself. I thought it would be a nice idea to create this topic so everyone can reply with what they're reading, what they've read in the past, or a book a friend is reading or suggested. This way, we can create a form of reading list to help inexperienced RPers, or just to give other people a chance to read something they haven't. So feel free to reply and add books you enjoy. Happy reading Very Happy

- Shiver, Linger and Forever - by Maggie Stiefvater.

- Eragon, Eldest, Brisingr and Inheritance - by Christopher Paolini.

- The Edge Chronicles (a series of books including Beyond the Deepwoods and Stormchaser) - by Chris Riddell and Paul Stewart.

- Wolf of the Plains - by Conn Iggulden.

- The Gates of Rome - by Conn Iggulden.

- Wolf Brother - by Michelle Paver.

- Skulduggery Pleasant - by Derek Landy.

- Flanimals - by Ricky Gervais.

- Artemis Fowl - by Eoin Colfer.

; I'll post more when I get around to reading some, and all of you feel free to reply with books you've enjoyed. Happy ready! Smile - luke. xoxo

Ugh. I did not enjoy Shiver at all. It was too focused on the romantic aspect of it than the fantasy side and, because it was set in a modern, real-life place, the fantastic elements were accepted too freely by those who had not known about the werewolves before hand. Grace's character was as flat as Sam's was predictable. And the last book? Dear god, I couldn't even finish it. This is just my opinion, though, as I'm incredibly picky when it comes to young adult novels (Tis what I write!)

In fact, I really don't like a lot of young adult fantasy, however any of Cassandra Clare's books are amazing. Her writing is very nice and her stories don't tend to focus on strictly romance. "City of Bones" is the first book in her "Mortal Instruments" series, which is modern day, but I prefer "Clockwork Angel", which is the prequel to the "Mortal Instruments" series set in Victorian London. You don't have to have read any of the "Mortal Instruments" books to get into "Clockwork Angel," though.

Of course, if you want the hard-core fantasy stuff, absolutely read "Lord of the Rings" and, if you can handle the mature themes, any of the "Game of Thrones" novels.

I find that a lot of young adult novels have inconsistencies and poor character development within them. Even though I'm guilty of having written a few myself, many of them contain Mary-Sue protagonists and one-sided antagonists.

My own advice to anyone who wants some real, hard-core high fantasy: Stick to the classics. There's more focus on the fantasy than on the typical 16 year old trying to fling herself at the first non-humanoid being she finds.

Good old fashioned Dracula. "Another Faust" and "Another Pan" are pretty good books, though, if you're looking for something more contemporary.

I agree with Jess about Shiver. It bored me to tears. Young Adult Fantasy = No.

Personally , if you want to further your rp , I'd suggest a number of novels.

George R.R Martin's Game of Throne's series is simply amazing with intricate plots throughout. Get involved if you can , it will make your appreciation of characters and motives very much more advanced.

China Mieville's stuff is alittle out there but Iron Council is really good for homosexual aspects of any rp and The Scar is just a great read. The characters and intense motivations really allow you to connect with the fantasy at hand.

Alittle out there but for more combat based fantasy I'd get you in touch with Dan Abnett and his Gaunt's Ghosts series. Alittle sci-fi and weird but really good with lovely colourful characters , flaws bared to the world. Made me sob when various characters died , it was moving.

The Bartimaius trilogy is also pretty great , especially the bit from a demonic perceptective , simply amazing.

Shakespeare. It is ALLLLL about Shakespearian drama. The struggles are timeless and you could set them in a housing estate in london if you tried. Emotions and motivations are vivid throughout. Themes of vengeance love and paranoia are just some of the things you can expect.

Artemis fouls really good!

I'm not reading any mythical fiction like books so far, been reading "the curious incident of the dog in the night-time", thinking about making an autistic char.

I could grammar nazi here , but I shan't. You should know your own mistakes.

The fowl books are...foul. Skullduggery pleasant is just the best for names. They're freaking awesome.
